Components [of a Place] (2023-)
What do I keep from the places that I hold dear?
Components is concerned with places from memory, morphed by
time, bias, trauma, and nostalgia. In this project, I use
the unreliability of my memory to create artifacts based on
places from my life. Through sculpture, I experiment with
decontextualizing domestic and architectural elements,
highlighting the way my memory immortalizes these objects,
and in turn, the places from which they were harvested.
The first part of this work was ceramic breezeblocks. Usually seen in dozens scaling the side of a building,
each of these breezeblocks is instead one of a kind, the different patterns borrowing from traditional bricks,
spacial ornaments, as well as abstract and nostalgic icons. In their singularity as well as their design, they
shed their accuracy and functionality and instead become ghostly representations of themselves.
